Edward Brown was born in Soham on 2nd February 1893 (Newmarket Q1-1893 3B:516), baptised in Soham on 26th March 1893, son of George and Sophia BROWN (née PALMER) of Clay Street, Soham.

1901 census...Aged 8, he was in Bushel Lane, Soham with his father George BROWN [35] a joiner; his mother Sophy [34]; brothers Frederick [9] and George [2]; sister Louisa [4]. All were born in Soham.

1911 census...Aged 18, an apprentice house painter, he was in Bushel Lane, Soham with his parents, brothers Frederick Alfred (market gardener) and George, and sister Dorothy Elizabeth [9] born in Soham. Sister Louisa was not at home, she was a domestic servant in Barway for Sarah Lister and her son Henry.

He married Daisy Isabel JONES in Islington in December 1913, she being a native of Bath in Somerset. Daisy's father was a Francis England JONES, a butcher, of 4 Bedford Street, Walcot, Bath. They had a son, Francis George, born in Soham in May 1914 but sadly dying only a few months later in Bath.
Edward left a 'Soldier's Will', dated 18th July 1917, in which he left all of his property and effects to his wife, named as Mrs E Brown of 4 Bedford Street, Walcot, Bath. She subsequently married a William Leach in Birmingham in 1921.

Sadly the pension card to back this has no mention of any Soham connection. It does seem though that Edward and his wife were in Soham in 1914 for the birth of their son. His name does not appear on the war memorial in Bath.

His elder brother Frederick died of his wounds in 1917 in France. see here

He enlisted in Bath. Three of his Company died that day, they were in action on the Menin Road during the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele)

Edward Brown is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium, addendum panel
